Ashwin Tops the Rankings

Around the World in 2 – a few occasional off-breaks

Each week for Mason & Guests I compile and broadcast a brief summary of cricket events outside the Caribbean, with a few “Did You Know, Andrew?” facts thrown in. Here’s this week’s round-up:

“Two days of England’s tour match v Australia A were completely washed out, after England had made 318-0 on the 1st day, with both Alastair Cook & Michael Carberry scoring not out 150s. The game, inevitably, was drawn on the 4th day. England’s final warm up match before the Ashes begins tonight v an Invitational XI in Sydney.”

This week’s question: The 2nd Test between India & West Indies will of course be Sachin Tendulkar’s 200th Test, and Shiv Chanderpaul’s 150th. Who were WI & India’s captains when they first opposed each other in a Test Match?

“South Africa have beaten Pakistan 4-1 in their 5-match ODI series in the UAE. They now play 2 T20 internationals.

“New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh ended with a 15 run win in the only T20 international. NZ are now touring Sri Lanka where they today won the 2nd ODI by 4 wickets, after the 1st match was abandoned. The teams play one more ODI then 2 T20 internationals.

Did you know, Andrew that Ravi Ashwin’s century & 5 wickets in the 1st Test v West Indies have taken him to the top of the ICC’s Test rankings for all-rounders? Despite his disappointing performance, Darren Sammy remains in the top 10, at no. 9.

“The 2nd Test begins tomorrow night at midnight (ECT) – 11pm in Jamaica. Shannon Gabriel has been called into the squad for the injured Kemar Roach.”

The answer to this week’s quiz question: Mohammed Azharuddin and Courtney Walsh at Nagpur in December 1994.

The Mason & Guests show is broadcast live on Tuesday’s from 6.15-8pm ECT (10.15-midnight GMT)  on Voice of Barbados 92.9fm and can be heard via numerous internet tune-in services.
