Around the World in 2 – a few occasional off-breaks

Each week for Mason & Guests I compile and broadcast a brief summary of cricket events outside the Caribbean, with a few “Did You Know, Andrew?” facts thrown in. Here’s this week’s round-up:

“Aus completed a series win over India today, drawing the 3rd Test at the MCG. They lead 2-0 with one game left. Ryan Harris was MoM for his all-round performance, while Capt, Steve Smith made 192 – his 5th Test ton of 2014 – & he’s avging 145.25 in the series with 581 runs. For India, Virat Kohli is avging 83.16 – his 169 & 54 took him to 499 runs in the series. Kohli will take over as India’s captain in the final Test at Sydney next week, after the retirement of Test skipper, MS Dhoni.

“Meanwhile, in the BBL, the Sydney Sixers are the early leaders with 3 wins in 4 games.

“NZ have gone 1-0 up in the 2-Test series with SL, with Capt, Brendan McCullum making 195 off 134 balls – 5 runs short of the fastest ever Test double century – for which he was made MoM. Did You Know, Andrew that not only has this been NZ’s most successful ever year in Test cricket, but they are the most successful Test team of 2014? They’ve won 5 Tests & lost only 2; winning 2 series & drawing 1. If they win or draw the 2nd Test starting Sat they will climb 2 places in the ICC’s Test rankings to 5th, above SL in 6th, & India, who will drop to 7th.

“Elsewhere, Zim have named Dav Whatmore as their new Coach. The 60-yr-old was born in SL, played Test cricket for Aus, & has previously been Coach of SL – twice, Bang, Pak, Lancs & KKR.”

A Few Birthdays & Anniversaries:

“Tomorrow is the 50th birthday of Winston Benjamin. He played 21 Tests between 1987-95 & took 61 wkts at 27, & 100 in 85 ODIs at 30. He was the 5th WI Test cricketer from Antigua, & Did You Know, Andrew that on the tour of Eng in 1988 he topped the series’ bowling avgs with 12 wkts at 12.58?

“New Year’s Day is the 71st birthday of Trinidad’s Charlie Davis. He played 15 Tests between 1968-73 & scored 1,300 runs at an awesome avg of 54.2 with 4 centuries. Did You Know, Andrew that in the 1971 series v India he scored 529 runs in 4 Tests at an avg of 132.25?

“Sat will be the anniversary of the 1932 birth of Trini quickie, Jaswick Taylor. He played 3 Tests in 1958-59, taking 10 wkts at 27.3. He died in 1999 aged 67.

“Mon will be the 57th birthday of Ezra Moseley. Born in Christ Church, Barbados he played 2 Tests in 1990, breaking Eng Capt Graham Gooch’s hand on his debut. He also played 9 ODIs & took 279 1st-class wkts at 23.3. Subsequently, Moseley has been a radio match summariser & a leading coach. When Jason Holder was recently made WI’s ODI captain, Ezra said of him: “His leadership qualities were obvious… last year I said he would soon become WI captain.”

“& finally, Mon is also the 34th birthday of Jamaica’s Marlon Samuels. In 54 Tests he’s scored over 3,000 runs at 35.21 with 6 100s, 20 50s & a HS of 260 v Bang in 2012. In 162 ODIs he’s scored over 4,000 runs at 32.8 with 7 100s & 23 50s. He also has 34 Test & 82 ODI wkts. On WI’s tour of Eng in 2012 he scored 386 runs in the 3 Tests at an avg of 96.5 with a century & 3 50s, for which he was made one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year. 4 months later his 78 off 56 balls in the World T20 Final v SL won him the MoM award & took WI to an eventual triumph by 36 runs.”
