Around the World in 2 – a few occasional off-breaks

Regularly for ‘Mason & Guests’ I put together a brief summary of cricket events outside the Caribbean, round-up the week’s notable WI birthdays & anniversaries, & throw in a few ‘Did You Know?’ facts:

“Hello! This is David Oram taking you ‘Around the World in 2‘:

“Eng won the only T20 v SL – but Spare a Thought for the tourists who lost the 9-match multi-format super-series by 20 pts to 4 – & depart the country win-less. Eng now face Pak in the 1st of 4 Tests at Lord’s on Thurs. Meanwhile, Eng’s women bt Pak’s ladies 3-0 in their T20 series.

“Elsewhere, Afghan, after a 1-0 series win over Scot, are in Ire to play 5 ODIs – the 1st of which was abandoned without a ball bowled, with the 2nd being played today.”

A Few Birthdays & Anniversaries:

“140 yrs ago today, the greatest WK of the 1st half of the 19th century, Tom Box, died. Post-playing he’d been groundsman at Middx’s Prince’s Club in Chelsea – where he was scoring the game v Notts in 1876 when he dropped down dead. The match was immediately abandoned.  Continue reading

“Eng completed a 3-0 victory in the 5-match ODI series with SL, to follow their 2-0 Test series win. They move up to 5th in the ODI rankings, with Aus top, & WI in 8th but closing the gap on those above them. All the recent intl matches between Eng & SL carried points to decide an overall cross-format winner – & before today’s only T20 Eng led by 18 pts to 4.

“Eng next play 4 Tests, 5 ODIs & a T20 v Pak, which sees the return after his conviction, ban & imprisonment for spot-fixing of Mohammad Amir. His 1st ball on his return to Eng was… a no-ball – but he was batting, facing the bowling of S’set’s Josh Davey.

“Pak’s women are already in the UK – & Eng won the ODIs 3-0; & are 1-0 up in the 3-match T20 series.

“Elsewhere, Afghan are in Scot for 2 ODIs. The 1st was abandoned yesterday by rain with the tourists 283-4 in the 48th over. The 2nd match is tomorrow.

“Meanwhile, Spare a Thought for East Sussex side Lewes St Michael who lost their recent game v Hailsham after they were locked out of their own ground – & no-one had the combination code for the pavilion. The visitors were awarded the full 25 pts.”  Continue reading

‘Howzat??!’ ‘$100 please’

Around the World in 2 – a few occasional off-breaks

Each week for ‘Mason & Guests’ I put together a brief summary of cricket events outside the Caribbean, round-up the week’s notable WI birthdays & anniversaries, & throw in a few ‘Did You Know?’ facts:

“Hello! This is David Oram taking you ‘Around the World in 2‘:

“Eng’s 3-Test series v SL starts on Thur, & the tourists are unfancied underdogs – underperforming in their 2 drawn not-so-warm-up matches, struggling with conditions – & the weather.

“Meanwhile, Eng’s women, who’re touring the Caribbean in Oct, will do so without Charlotte Edwards, who’s retired after being sacked as Capt. She played over 300 times for Eng over more than 20 yrs, captaining them 220 times.

“In the IPL, it’s very close, with Sunrisers Hyderabad top, but any of 6 teams could still win it. Virat Kohli’s now hit 752 runs with 3 centuries, while Mitch McClenaghan has 17 wkts.

“Elsewhere, Spare a Thought for Bangladesh’s former intl umpire Nadir Shah, who was knocked near-unconscious during a Dhaka League match. He was hit flush on the forehead at square leg by a full-blooded sweep & had to be helped from the field. It was Shah’s 1st professional game since 2012 – when he was banned after an undercover TV program revealed he was among several umpires willing to give decisions for a fee. Inside information about pitch conditions, the toss & the selected XIs was also available. What’s not clear is whether the info & decisions would be sold on a sliding scale: maybe $10 for a no-ball; $100 for an lbw; & $1000 for obstructing the field.”  Continue reading

“In the IPL the Gujarat Lions remain top; & the tournament’s leading scorer is still Virat Kohli, now with 561 runs. Leading bowler is Andre Russell with 14 wkts at 17.

“SL’s tour of Eng is underway but they’re being badly outplayed by 2nd division Essex in their 1st warm-up. The tour features 3 Tests, 5 ODIs & 1 T20.

“In the County Championship, Tino Best took 5-90 in his 2nd outing for Hants; & Anguilla’s Chesney Hughes hit his 2nd hundred of the season for Derbys. But Spare a Thought for Ravi Rampaul, who took 2 early wkts for Surrey in their current game v Yorks, but then saw Joe Root & Johnny Bairstow add 372 for the 4th wkt in only 67 ovs.

“Meanwhile, Did You Know that Brett D’Oliveira achieved a unique 1st yesterday when he scored 202no for Worcs? He thus emulated his father, Damien & grand-father Basil D’Oliveira in scoring a 1st-class double-hundred – the only instance of batsmen reaching that figure across 3 generations in cricket history.”  Continue reading

“In the new ICC Test rankings, Aus remain at no.1, with India 2nd, Pak 3rd, Eng 4th & NZ 5th. SA dropped a dramatic 17 pts & 3 places from 3rd to 6th. SL are 7th; & 8th placed WI are now only 8 pts ahead of Bang in 9th. WI have dropped 11 pts, while Bang gained 10.

“In the IPL, Gujarat Lions are top & Kings XI Punjab bottom – despite Kings XI’s upset win over the Lions on Sun. Virat Kohli is top run scorer with 433 & Mitch McClenaghan leading wkt taker with 13.

“In Pak, Younis Khan got over his sulk & returned to capt Giggly Boom Boom Bubble Gum KPK to victory over Cookania Cake Rusk Punjab in the final of the Cool Cool National One Day Cup. Younis was fined 50% of his match fee for storming out of the tournament, & was made to apologise twice to the PCB before being allowed to play again.

“Elsewhere, Spare a Thought for Scottish Club Kilmarnock, who’ve been thrown out of the 1st division of the Western District Cricket Union for fielding 2 ineligible players. The news made headlines because they were the 16 & 18 yr-old sons of intl elite panel umpire Aleem Dar. They played under false names, claiming to be from Glasgow, & not overseas players. The scheme was devised by Kilmarnock’s vice-president who’s since resigned. The 164-yr-old club promised to bounce back, saying: ‘We have fought back from fire, flood & countless other setbacks since 1852.’ Meanwhile, umpire Dar was at pains to deny his boys were in any way from Scotland: ‘Both have Pakistani passports & they’re proud to be Pakistanis. We have no doubt about that at any level,’ he said.”  Continue reading
