‘Darren Sammy’s views on the WICB aren’t shared by all in the Caribbean’ – my opinion piece for First Post

5th April 2016

Patrolling the Boundary  – a view from the outfield

The 2016 ICC World T20 tournament

For First Post during the T20 World Cup I covered and reported on the West Indies.

In his post match interview, West Indies captain Darren Sammy had strong words to say about the West Indies Cricket Board.

But his, and his fellow team-mates, dissatisfaction with the Board is not necessarily shared by all observers of Caribbean cricket.

Here is my view for First Post.

Sorry but I think you have this totally wrong. 99% of the Caribbean would agree with me, the 1% having Cameron or Muirhead as a surname. All of the top players and the Indian Board have supported the players, and will continue to do so Darren knew what he was doing and half of that squad will never play again under this board, who have to go sooner rather than later, for the sake of,WI cricket. I and just about everyone on social media from all around the world agree with the players!

Greetings Terry. Apologies for not replying earlier – but my PC dies earlier this week! Just beginning to catch up. I think you are right that the masses do agree with Sammy – but a lot of people only hear Sammy etc.’s version of things. I do think there is another side, and a bigger picture re distribution of pay. I’m pleased there has been a lot written in the Caribbean this week expressing similar views to mine – i.e. That this is not quite as clear-cut as Sammy, Bravo, Gayle indicate. I hope you heard Mason & Guests this week, on which both Dr Don Marshall and Conde Riley were excellent. But I think personalities have got in the way of the debate. Personally, I think Darren Sammy is a wonderful, honest man. I do not feel the same way about the President of the WICB. Hope we can chat about this, and the WIndies victories soon on the podcast! Best, David
